2012 Gunderloch Messidor Beerenauslese

Post by AW77 »

Gunderloch is a VDP-producer from Rheinhessen (although they don't use the VDP grape eagle for marketing this wine). This BA is a blend of Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. It was fermented and matured in stainless-steel vats. The grapes came from the whole Rheinhessen region, which is unusual, as BAs are normally made from single vinyards. The Messidor is sold in standard and half bottles, both have screwcaps (which is also unusual for a BA). The price is also unusual, I paid 10 Euros for this half bottle:

pale yellow, smells of sweet peach and lychee, full and fruity body, sweet, but not cloyingly sweet, hardly any acidity, no Botrytis, in the mouth sweet peach and lychee, which also can be found in the aftertaste, good length, the peach lingers on the palate after swallowing the wine,
A good BA which could do with a little bit more acidity, but for this price it's a fantastic wine. This is the BA for everyday.
