2001 Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904

Post by DRT »

No note taken at the time so this is from memory...

Beautiful aroma of ripe strawberry and cherry as it poured into the decanter. The colour showed some maturity but is still a full opaque red. Wonderfully thick and smooth in the mouth with concentrated dark fruits, great acidity and spice on the finish. My only mistake was opening it to drink with fish - it would have been even better with half a dead animal or something a little spicy. Excellent wine that should be left alone for a decade or more.

About two hours after opening the decanter developed a serious problem.

It was fortunate that you didn't drink the red Rioja with fish while having dinner with James Bond. In "From Russia with Love" Bond kills the Soviet agent because he makes the mistake of ordering red wine with fish. :)

Thankfully, I have so far managed to stay one step ahead of MI5

As much as I enjoy your company, I am not available for that sort of thing, Daniel.

Then again - I can imagine a chilled, light Ukrainian red would be marvellous with fish. Perhaps Mr Bond was just guilty of cultural ignorance?

That's what a small supply of 1/2 bottles is good for.

Or that more consideration should have been given to the purchase of magnums.
