Drunk at the Loosen winery with Ernest Loosen and Sales Manager Désirée Schröder on 13th August 2014.
Grown on red volcanic soil; designated as 'alte reben', or old vines. A rich nose. I detected fresh spice: cardamom? clove? Some fruitiness too. There's a lovely warm spiciness behind this.
Ernie Loosen told us that he thought of Riesling as the white twin of Pinot Noir: it needs a cool climate, it expresses its soil very clearly, it's fruity when it's young; they age similarly and have a very similar aroma structure. He also told us that he likes to drink an old Auslese with venison, and told us exactly how to cook it with redcurrants and chanterelles.

I found this note in my little black book: "herbal, spicy, pretty good, they told us that this one needs at least a year in the bottle, so vintage + 2 years"
