Never-before-seen bottle stopper

Has anyone ever experienced this peculiar little fellow?
I bought a bottle of Riesling from a shop in Berlin today, and under the foil was a strange metal cap, a screwcap with no thread:

And beneath this, a most strange thing, a glass stopper with a rubber seal:

Anybody ever seen this before? André? The wine is from Mosel.

Yes, I've had these. I think they're called Vinolok:

They were more fashionable some years ago and now I rarely seem them anymore.
There's an Spiegel article on this form of closure:

Well that killed that thread!

Well people here could still discuss alternative closure methods. Personally, I woulnd't mind such closures provided that they don't affect the wine negatively in the long run. Every corked bottle is a bottle too much.

I like corks.

Exactly! But what if they do affect the wine. What if all these hermetically sealed thingys produce wines with all the personality of the windows paperclip? It is one of the reasons that I distrust new world wines, they all taste clean and well made. Where is the fag ash and offal that goes into good French wine? Down with uniformity. Hurray for cranky old things that work sporadically.

Were you looking in the mirror when you typed that?

An angle mirror if you must know.

I will remind you of this quote the next time you complain about a corked bottle. :)

This may be another explanation of my defence of corks; I rarely notice corked wines.

Thank you both for reviving this thread, which André very nearly killed stone dead with his efficient, unquestionably accurate and comprehensive answer.

I have seen one of these glass stoppers on something, I think though that it was the plastic gromit which provided the seal rather than glass to glass contact. Glass to glass tends to stick, as owners of old decanters can testify.

I love the glass stoppers which are quite common in Austrian wines. My wife collects them as they do come in different colours! They also allow for re-corking (re-glassing?) in a very efficient manner.

And I am sure you do your bit for her hobby by drinking the wine. All good relationships are based on mutuality. I like your nom de plume by the way, the port forum has had trouble with argumentative Gouda and surly Stilton so friendly cheese is most welcome, as are you; welcome to the port forum.

I use these sensors from Sensorist to monitor temperatures.
