NV Badenhorst Caperitif Kappse Dief #4

Significant amounts of high quality vermouth used to be produced by South African winemakers in the period 1900-1940. Production died out during the second world war but was restarted by Badenhorst in 2014. The mixture of botanicals used was developed to match as closely as possible to the flavour profile of a batch of Cape Vermouth from the 1920s discovered in a cellar in Newcastle. The label design is based on the1920s labels. The mix of 40 different botanicals includes a range of citrus flavours, quinine and a varierty of herbs from the Fynbos.

A gentle orange in colour. Very floral and herbaceous on the nose, extremely interesting and complex. Bitter on the palate with the quinine and citrus oils dominating. The bitterness dominates the aftertaste and delivers a long finish. A very interesting fortified wine. (Not scored due to my inexperience with this style of wine.) Drunk 11-Oct-17.
Top Ports in 2018 (so far): Niepoort VV (1960's Bottling), Quinta do Noval Nacional 1994 and San Leonardo Very Old White (Bottled 2018)
2017 Ports of the year: Fonseca 1927 and Quinta do Noval 1927
