NV Muratie Cape Ruby

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Muratie Cape Ruby NV, Stellenbosch, South Africa. Available by the glass (or bottle) from the bar at Bakubung. Poured from an opened bottle that had sat on the shelf for an unknown time. Dark brown with a hint of dark red and a narrow rim, otherwise entirely opaque. From the appearance it looks as though it has been open for some time. Stewed berries on the nose, not unpleasant but not fresh and fruity as would be expected from a newly opened Cape Ruby. Even a touch of pine resin on the nose, indicating slight oxidation. Smoothly textured sweet blackcurrant and strawberries hit the palate, surprisingly fresh compared to the nose. This port has a nice palate presence, balanced by a modest acidic core but loses balance slightly on the late palate with a saccharine cloying tone. Hints of the pine resin show a touch of oxidation. A little heat shows on the aftertaste before the gentle tannins mix with red jelly babies on the long and tasty finish. Although rather lightweight, this is impressive for a Cape Ruby due to the "anything but lightweight" finish. 84/100. 31-Aug-17.
