2009 Quinta da Leda

Bought by the bottle for £69 from the Hotel du Vin in Bristol - but they only have 2 bottles left.

After sitting in the decanter for about an hour this was sharp, acidic and unbalanced. I was worried. However after a further 30 minutes this had started we to pull itself together and after 180 minutes presented a very different wine. With sufficient time in the glass this provided a sweet and floral nose, nicely combining fruit with sweet rose perfume. On the palate this has a powerful acidity (which is what worried me at first) and tannins which grip firmly, especially with some air, but there is good levels of red and black cherry fruit and the whole set of components combined perfectly to compliment a Porterhouse steak. The aftertaste is amazing and is followed by a very, very long finish. The aftertaste is actually what made me keep faith with the wine when I first tasted it. Still very young. 91/100. Drunk 17/2/17. Decanted 3 hours.

These do need a good long decant at their young stage right now. I've experienced the same as you in a pop and pour scenario. With plenty of air these are wonderful wines. Try the 2011, which I like slightly better.

Last year I had the good fortune to attend a vertical of Leda featuring the 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014. For me the 2011 was the stand-out wine but it was very different from the other vintages - but I liked it enough to buy a six-pack. This was a great opportunity to try a vintage for the first time.
