What Her Majesty will be drinking in Germany

Post by AW77 »

I thought it would be fun to do some research on what Her Majesty will be drinking during her state visit to Germany.
So far only little information can be found.
But this is definitely one she will try with her lunch in Frankfurt on Thursday:
1953 Kloster Eberbach Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder (the German name for Pinot noir):

(1953 being the year of her coronation)

The press also mentions Rheingau Riesling from the Hochheimer Victoriaberg by Flick, but without saying which type or vintage.

More anon.

Further research shows that Her Majesty had a Stigler Freiburg Schlossberg Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) Weisherbst (Blanc de Noir) Beerenauslese with her dessert at the state banquet in Berlin. The vintage is not disclosed in this press article: http://www.badische-zeitung.de/ihringen ... 98948.html
But since this particular wine was only made in 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2013, the possible vintage is probably the last one as this is still available at the winery. It's an odd choice as the winery is not well known and the BA is not made of Riesling.

The Independent wrote:According to Margaret Rhodes, the Queen's cousin, HM's alcohol intake never varies. She takes a gin and Dubonnet before lunch, with a slice of lemon and a lot of ice. She will take wine with lunch and a dry Martini and a glass of champagne in the evening. That comes to 6 units per day, which would make Her Majesty a binge drinker by government standards.

Doff hat to HRH. I suspect her binge drinking image will be severely compromise due to a lack of tattoos.

In their current e-mail-newsletter the Wegeler Estates announced that the Queen was served their 2009 Wegeler Geheimrat »J« Riesling Sekt brut at the state banquet in Berlin:

I hope the man who served it to her was more friendly than the bloke who served us at Wegeler in the Rheingau!
