Tue 15 Nov 2016 - Dinner with Johnny Symington

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

On Tuesday 15th November, Johnny Symington hosted a wine and Port dinner at the Naval & Military Club and a few members of TPF were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to attend. The meal was specially created by the Club's Executive Chef to accompany the wines with the menu being the following:

Welcome Drink - Dow Fine White Port with tonic and mint, accompanied by air dried ham and roasted almonds
Fish Course - Salt Cod with Chorizo and White Bean Cassoulet accompanied by Altano Branco 2015
Main Course - Fillet of beef, pot glazed red cabbage, ox tail pie, potato fondant with curly kale and a port reduction glaze accompanied by Vesuvio 2011 Douro DOC
Cheese - Oxford Blue, Barber’s Cheddar and Rosary Ash accompanied by Graham 20YO Tawny and Graham 1972 Single Harvest Tawny
Dessert - Layered chocolate cake with West Indies cream, cinnamon tapioca and orange tuile accompanied by Graham Six Grapes Vinha Velha, 1980 Warre and 1977 Smith Woodhouse (from magnum)

It was a splendid evening with the company, food, wine and Ports being all that would have been hoped in such a charming environment. With luck, Johnny may be willing to host something similar in 2017.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Love the Altana Branco (sadly they don't import it to the states). Was that your first time trying the Six Grapes VV? What did you think of it?

This was the first time I tried the VV Six Grapes. I'll need to try it side by side to see what the difference really is, but is was soft, round and really quite delicious. Sadly, as soon as you took a sip of the Warre 1980 or the SW77 the difference in class was obvious and clear to everyone but I'd happily drink a glass or two of the six grapes with or after a meal.
