Wed 11 May 2016, Habit: reconnaissance

Post by jdaw1 »

As reconnaissance of the Davy’s boozer Habit (Friary Court, 65 Crutched Friars, Aldgate EC3N 2AE, tel +44 20 7481 1131), Mike invited me to lunch on Wednesday 11th May 2016.

At ‘the rear’ of the restaurant was a space in which tables could be arranged, Woolgate-style, such that we have one 67cm-by-67cm table each.

It looks very pre-refurb Bunghole-esque - i.e. nice.

How was it? Did you ask if they can supply 4,000 hand-washed glasses with only three hours notice? Service? Aesthetics ( )?

...is exactly what Julian and I thought. Could it cope with a 14 person tasting? Just about, with significant table rearrangement.

My overall conclusion was that we are unlikely to be inclined to visit unless the B&F collapses. For me the B&F has a wonderful ambiance and décor, which is aged, but not in a tatty way. And at the B&F we have an excellent table that accommodates 14 effortlessly in a private room.

I would not be surprised if The Habit was subjected to a Bung Hole-style refurb.

Edit: I forgot to mention. The Habit is also that bit further east, which is less ideal for many of the regulars...
