I have been at Henley Regatta since 10:30 this morning and might have had more than two Pimms.

I am very excited at the prospect of meeting Owen.

Does anyone fancy dinner after we leave the tasting at 8:30?

Thanks for the heads up, I was hoping to go to this event. I now have secured a ticket (thanks Harry at BBR, very helpful), and look forward to seeing you there.

This response is a bit late but I've only been able to get online now.
Henley can go hang. We went rowing on the Schlachtersee today, cooled our Rheingau Riesling Sekt (€9.99 in Kaiser's) in the lake water and drunk it from the bottle. The whorls and eddies spinning from my oars as I silently cut the water told me that the Naiads shared our thrilled pleasure. I'm no sculler (never been in one) but put me in a clinker and I'm happy as Larry. And no Boris Johnson, which was surely the best part of the deal. Then from the shore we heard shouting and what sounded like someone firing a cannon and we surmised that Germania had scored in the Fußball.
Really, France; 1815, 1870, 1914, 1940.. and now 2014. To lose so to the Germans so determinedly, and quite so often, starts to look like a character flaw. When a man told us off for crossing the road today before the green man lit up, I was reminded, in the words of the poet, that 'wann jeder Mann ist Polizei,/ dann ist kein Mann frei'.
Anyway where were we? Dinner after the Port Walk? Yes please, +1.

Provided the numbers stay below 8 and provided everyone is willing to wear a suit and tie (and no denim, no trainers), we could head down the road to the Oxford & Cambridge Club.

Jacket and tie is fine, provided you also wear smart trousers.

8 people at a table is the max that they are comfortable accommodating. If we end up being more than 8 then we would need to split over two tables (and may need a second member to make a separate booking).

Have also managed to secure a couple of tickets for this. Interesting to note that the event is not only being repeated on the Friday but also in Basingstoke on the 21st. I'm not sure that was the case in previous years-testament to the increasing popularity of Port perhaps.?

Alex, if any more places can be made available for dinner count two of us in.Otherwise we'll make our way to a less salubrious establishment together with the rest of the riff raff!

Is the Basingstoke one a separate event? I think that's been advertised for some time.

Oh, Alex how my old heart leapt at your kind suggestion. I have a tie, but I can't help thinking it looks odd with my Zummerset smock.

It is indeed pretty prompt to start at 18.30 and one is pretty promptly out the door for 20.30. Two hours of serious hoovering and polite chitchattery.
