Yes please. (Though, please, ‟Cálem”, with accent.)

Should I do the usual?

Yes please. I don't get to drink many wines from Calem (with or without an accent) and those I do drink, I enjoy.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Yes, please, Julian Without you these tastings would be much less organised and much less enjoyable.

This is a vey good question, Jdaw. I asked both, the Sogevinus Group and Bento Amaral to check the selo-number. The selo came up with a Colheita from the late 60s, which does not make sense. It says on the bottle engarrafeira em 1937. Lets see.

Thank you.

The importer still exists: michelsen.de, ‟! L.W.C. Michelsen, der Genußmanufaktur für Feinkost, Spezialitäten, Weine und Präsente seit 1814 in Hamburg”. Have you asked them whether the ‟Cheires” was an importer’s brand? (The upper label is in Portuguese, so might have a different source. But worth asking. If you are too shy in German, I’ll ask in English.)

it probably didn't have a Selo to begin with (like many bottles in the cellars of producers). Only once it was taxed or ready for sale the Selo could have then been applied and registered. So possibly why the IVDP now shows it being from the 60's. as that was the register date of the Selo.

I've run across a similar occurrence once before with an old Colheita I was researching.

Andy, fortunately it did have a Selo and I do have some possibles of its origin. Assuncao Calem told me that this most probably was a Vintage Port bottled later than ususal. Pedro Sa said roughly the same. Bento Amaral researched the Selo and it was for a registered lot of Colheitas bottled in the late 70s. I had a quick argument with him about this and we more or less agreed in assuming that the selo was used improperly for this bottle.

I am very curious to see what comes out, when we open this bottle.

Unfortunately not enough members seem to be interested in a tasting like this. If we do not receive some 10 members by the end of March, I would rather like to have the Warre/ Warre LBV tasting there and keep the Calems for a later event.

Perhaps a couple of posts to keep this current to check for more interest might garner addition sign-ups (several of the frequent attendees of larger tastings have not replied for this one yet) in case people missed the original posting of this event over Xmas; I hope so, as am looking forward to it.

Phil.

Re: Calem Vertical April 23rd - CANCELED for Warre LBV

Post by Axel P »

Dear all,

since we have a good other topic for April 23rd and Calem does not seem to rock the hearts of the island, I cancel the Calem vertical and will move this to a time, where hopefully more of you have made the very good experiences with old Calem Vintage Ports and will be more enthusiastic about this.

@Julian: looking much forward to the Warre LBV-tasting.

Can the word "CANCELED" be replaced with "Postponed"?

Hi,

very happy that the Calem vertical was postponed since due to business reasons I would have not been able to attend anymore. Would want suggest a date very much later in the year since it is getting too warm for old ports in tastings.

regards
