Emergency OL @ TCP - Sunday 6/2 at 7pm

Post by Chris Doty »

Long Lost Friends,

I am breaking out of Dublin for the weekend, and haven't had vintage port in so long I've forgotten what it tastes like.

Looking to meet up at TCP for a casual (but much needed!) tasting. Given timing constraints, etc, I'd propose 'bring a bottle of vintage port, blind.'

Please let me know if you'd be able to attend!

Hi Chris,

have you booked a table? I agree it should not be a problem on a Sunday but you never know. Will bring a Croft 1966 which I just put upright  :D

Hi Chris,

uups have overread the sentence, bring a bt blind. Have put another bt straight up for tomorrow to make your initial theme. Please let me know what to bring; the bt (blind) or a Croft 1966 I wanted to try for a long time.
BTW thank you for this offline since when trying to find the Croft 1966 I also found the 1980 Sandeman for the Sandemann tasting, which i was trying to find for over a week now.
I am not very organised in these things, which I like and do not like. On the other hand this time I was really worried that I did a KilleB :?
So again Thank you!!!!!!

I sooo need an offline with some decent port, but I can't make it. Just too many other things on at the moment. Still, I will think of you on Sunday and may well open a bottle and drink it blind as part of a virtual offline.

Not sure when I'll next be in London and able to take part in a real offline :(

I'm sure it will be sometime in February :)
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Hi Alex,

This is sad, but very understandable. At the moment also for me having an offline is difficult to include in the schedule. Also tonight I will need to leave fairly early in order to get home to make all of tommorrows comittments :? :(

I am fairly sure I cannot make another offline in February since nearly every day is already booked up :x

Hope early March will be better!

Sorry to hear it AHB,

Welcome to the party RAYC -- good to have you on board.

Booked a table for 5 (ever the optimist) for this evening. Tom, Jacob, Derek, etc etc etc -- who wants to come out and play?

We are 2 for 2 so far, with two others in the queue.

Too bad there are only three of us with all this great port!

I am going to stumble into the superbowl!

I couldn't attend this off-line because I was going to Edinburgh for the weekend. As things worked out I spent all day and most of this evening in various AA trucks being "recovered" from Edinburgh >> Glasgow >> Carlisle >> Chesterfield. Oh how I wish I had chosen the off-line! :?

Excellent showing from Wolfgang and Rob.

We enjoyed the:

1966 Delaforce
WOTN from this fun little tasting. Burnt caramel sweetness. Fully mature, but still with good weight and decent balance. Not a monster, not a life changer, but just very solid and largely complete vintage port. Very nice indeed. Guessed the 66 Croft! 90+ points

1966 Croft
Cut from a similar cloth to the Delaforce, the only real issue for me on this guy was the slightly astringent and off-balanced finish. Lacks some complexity/purpose, but this was open for business and still hard to compain about. Guessed the 66 Croft!! 86points

1967 Taylor Vargellas
Much redder in color than the other two, but just one year younger. This was more floral, more feminine, and more fruity. I quite liked it, but it didn't have the fleshyness of great ports. 88points

1983 Smith Woodhouse
Closed closed closed. Guessed an '83 Grahams -- at least I had the vintage right. This showed that maybe a great bottle could merit a 90-91 pt score, but not this guy. Not Rated (FLAWED)

But better even than the bottles was the old feeling of funny friends and amusing conversation at TCP. Great service as always (though their decanters have been broken). Was waay overdue.

good times
