2021 Virtual Tasting #1 - Thursday 14th Jan

My diary is currently looking rather bereft of tastings (even virtual ones), so wondered if anybody fancies a bit of a get together on the 14th January?

MPM has offered to provide Zoom functionality (irrespective of his current temperance).

Assuming sufficient interest in doing this, and given that we all seem to be awash with LBVs at the moment, how about an LBV theme?

Yes please. I like the theme. Will be either Graham or Niepoort 2015 as that is what is in the wine fridge LBV rack.

Think I may go slightly avant-garde - Andreson 2012.

Yes please! I will likely open a 2011 Crasto in 375ml bottle.

Yes please. I was thinking very similar thoughts about a dearth of tastings.

I’ll probably open a Graham 2015 LBV.

Handily I already have a bottle of 2015 Taylor LBV open but I might add a bottle of 2015 Graham LBV to the mix, just to see what the fuss is about.

Maybe we should plan to do this every two weeks going forward? That was more or less what we did during the first lockdown.

@ nac - Perhaps alternating between Wednesday and Thursday to allow for family and work logistics? Perhaps with a relatively broad theme each time - this one's LBVs; perhaps older SQVPs next time, tawnies the time after that and so on. Even if, like me, due to the virus one's cellar is largely inaccessible one can pick something drinkable up from a supermarket to feed that kind of thematic tasting.

Yup, good idea re alternating dates, and agree that relatively simple/accessible themes should work well.

To help people plan diaries, how about the following future events to take us up to the end of February:
Tasting #2 - Wednesday 27th January - Tawnies
Tasting #3 - Thursday 11th February - SQVPs
Tasting #4 - Wednesday 24th February - theme tbc

Clearly if people don’t have something thematic then anything will do!

I’ll open up a thread for each one after the previous event.

I will do the same. When will you decant? On the day, noon?

They are filtered LBVs, will decanting early help much? The Taylor is already open, but I'm happy to open the Graham at a time deemed ideal.

Based on my experience while tasting several 2015 LBVs before Christmas, yes. I felt that the 2015 Graham LBV was best on the second day. It was served pop-and-pour on the first night which may have contributed to the second day showing better. Ergo, I would decant it for at least 4 hours - full-on decant, not just pop the cork and let it get some air.

I wish I could find some in the US... it has reached the east coast, but has not yet reached my usual internet stores in California. I'll be picking up a case once it does reach CA!

For the LBV tasting this week I will be having a first sample of the Taylor’s 2016 LBV which I hope will give the Graham’s 2015 a run for its money.

I plan to buck the trend and have an unusual LBV standing up - Gould Campbell 1970 LBV - bottled in 1974

In which case I’ll decant at 09:00 on the day.

Zoom invite should be with everyone who has signed up - as usual shout if not received! Have decided to break my abstinance for the occasion!
