1991/92 Double Horizontal

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

I was looking back through our offlines and we have organised tastings of most major vintages having done 1945, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985 and 1994. (And 1997, although I wasn't there).

The obvious gap is 1991/92.

If I were to organise a 1991 / 1992 double horizontal this Autumn or Winter, would anyone else be interested in taking part? if 14 people attended, I'd aim to put together 7 pairs of ports with the 1991 and 1992 vintages from each shipper.

People:
  1. AHB;
  2. IDJ;
  3. CMAG;
  4. RJG;
  5. CPR;
  6. DRL;
  7. PW;
  8. MPM;
  9. THRA;
  10. SCD;
  11. JDAW;
  12. WPS;
  13. TC
  14. VDSS.

I would be up for that Alex as it's one that was mooted a few years back. Maybe I shouldn't have decanted that bottle of V92 only an hour ago!

Depending on timing, I'm game.

Will you pair SQ's with declared ports, or focus on those who declared both?

Burmester, Calem, Kopke, Niepoort, Rosa, Smith Woodhouse and Vesuvio all declared both - (there are probably others)

Yes please... I only have a Yeatman Hotel labelled 92 though, so would probably need to adopt please.

Personally I'm hoping for the majors (FG91 vs F92, G91 vs GM92 etc), perhaps with some dual declarers depending on availability.

I'm also keen on the majors, with some that declared both. Might perhaps be interesting, if we can, to have both Taylor Vargellas 91 and Terra Feita 91.

Hmmmm, for me the best port of this tasting should be T92! After this then F92, TV 91, TF91, D91,Cr91, Delaforce 92 and Ni91 come to mind. Imho FG91 is good but not really great as the above listed. QH91 as well as G91 can also be very good as well as V91 and 92. Adding a Morgan 91 and my preferred line up of 14 ports would be complete.

Ah but that's another interesting different option Wolfgang - you seem to be implicitly suggesting a "best of 91 vs best of 92" rather than pairs of 91/92 from the same shipper.

The reason for my suggestion to go for a best of selection of 91/92 stems mainly from the limitation to 14 ports. If you make that just up of pairs we will include not all interesting ports in my view and just doing a check if the split declaration makes sense.
I initially thought e.g. TV 91 would better than T92 but T92 in good condition is just that notch better. From experience the split declaration made sense. Just doing pairs of the VPs of houses which declared both years maybe a bit boring as imho we leave out the really nice ports of 91/92

Daniel - you would be welcome to join us and take the 14th seat. Since you'll need to travel to take part, is there a particular time in Sep-Nov which would work best for you?
