THRA’s original post below the line.

At last December's 'turkey shoot' sale at Christies, I wasn't targeting lot 557

https://www.christies.com/Lotfinder/lot ... 7b5d5c16f5

I'm not under stocked on either '22 or '24 and the strangely low estimate rang alarm bells.

..but I wasn't going to let eleven bottles of near century old port go for just £850 hammer.

So I bid £900 - and won the lot..

Have looked at the bottles for the first time today, and the lot description didn't do them justice. All the bottles have perfectly intact wax capsules, and the colour looks promising. The worst level is on one of the '22s at low shoulder - not below low shoulder as billed. Only one of the '24s shows seepage (not two) and that's very minor.

- But who's the shipper?

Anyone want to mosey round to my pub this weekend, to give me an excuse to pop that ullaged '22?

(or failing that, a better suggestion...)

Far be it for me to stand in the way of my port chums offering to share the case with you next week; however, if the above proposal doesn't fit with Tom's arrangements for any reason, and he is still looking for someone to join him with sampling and cork identification on this Saturday evening in Newport, then I would be very happy and able to attend!

Tom: awaiting your confirmation.
- Do we have a quorum?

Phil is coming to the White Horse anyway tomorrow night, but we have a 'plan B' if the '22 is to be saved for later, as I also have a stash of '54s that need identifying. (I have also acquired a couple of bottles of wine from Phil's birth year (69) - which are thin on the ground now..)

So either, or - or both - please gents..

Thanks for the suggestion, but the plan is to share some port tomorrow, whether the '22 or not; so the' 69 (non-port) is perhaps more likely saved for another time with more people, given limitations and the desire to drink port tomorrow.

From a purely selfish perspective I'd like it to be next Thurs which would then afford me the excuse/opportunity to drop off my '63s...

So, we didn't drink the '22 on Saturday given Julian's cheeky intervention, however we did have a very enjoyable evening with a delicious Harvey's '54 and Graham's 63. The Harvey's was fabulous, darker than the G63 and in superb condition, with wonderful aromas immediately post-decant, full and delicious flavour, sweet and long. Certainly believable that this might have been Grahams (which it is believed to be from Broadbent). The G63 by comparison was also very good, firmer but with a slight heat on the finish, though only minor. A pair of excellent wines, and very enjoyable evening, thank you Tom.

To suggest a case tasting is never cheeky. Merely sensible.

This might be possible. Will confirm tomorrow.

I am fairly certain I have no 1922s immediately to hand.

I cannot make it on the dates, but could contribute some.

How about we do a 22 tasting on the monday prior to the Xmas tasting. Should be a very nice tasting.

Best

As 22s are a bit thin on the ground, why don't we make the theme of this year's elegant luncheon (Weds Dec 19th?) 'something from the '20s'

I'm assuming we're going for Thurs 20th for the Xmas bash, with an Offley vertical (probably at the B&F) on the 18th.

Tom, how should yours be described?
Robinson & Payne 1922, level low shoulder, to be decanted at the table. (I will push the cork in)

Can someone with the knack, bring the technology to bag out the cork? - the bottle is a very old three part moulded piece and was probably second hand when used - would be a pity to break it..

No objection to a 1920, or a ’24, or even a ’27. Please post.
