2018 Offline Summary

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

I thought that it might be of use to have a summary or index to past offlines and possible future offlines being organised through or attended by posters on TPF. With a single summary list it should be easier for people to see quickly whether there is an offline coming up that they would like to attend.

All offlines on the list are set out with the following information:
Date (Location) Theme
Tue 2nd Jan 2018 (London) Bring a Bottle (Ideally of 1878)
Thu 18th Jan 2018 (London) Anyone Around?
Sat 17th Feb 2018 (Leverkusen) Quinta do Noval 1955-2015 Including Some Nacional
Tue 15th May 2018 (London) Port Fit for a Duchess
Wed 6th Jun 2018 (London) Port with an 8

Useful links to previous offline summaries for 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008 and by shipper.

Some ideas that have not yet had dates set:
Thu 30th Nov 2017 (London) Sandemans and 1970s
TBA (London) A Colheita / Aged Tawny Tasting
TBA (Florida) A Weekend at Bern's
TBA (TBA) Vintage Port v Colheita from the same years
TBA (London) A 1991 - 1992 Comparative
TBA (London) Warre LBV
TBA (Leverkusen) Messias Ports - Colheita vs Vintage
TBA (London) An Intersection Offline
TBA (London) So Who's The Best Single Quinta Then?
TBA (London) A Pint of Port
TBA (UK somewhere) A Tasting with Proper Decanters
TBA (New York / London) A Simultaneous Warre Vertical
TBA (Boston) Anyone in Boston?
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

An idea for another slightly different tasting: "Battle of the blends"
Primarily to include cross-producer blends, such as:
- Any Factory House vintages
- Any Avery VP blends
- Others?
Depending on number of people/ports, we could extend the any VP blends, i.e. to include crusted, perhaps with limit e.g. <='77, and not counting the Cockburn '77 crusted since it's all from a single year and producer.

Could we invite shippers to submit bottles? For a competition that we should describe as ‘playful’?

Yes, we could invite. I think we would end up with ≈ zero bottles.

Alternatively, we pick a vintage and create blends of Dow-Graham-Warre, Croft-Fonseca-Taylor, Ferreira-Offley-Sandeman, others?

Another idea: "Battle of the vineyards: Vargellas vs Terra Feita"

The first (that I know of) TTF vintage was in '82, so taking all TTF vintages and TVs in same span would be:
TTF: 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2008
TV: 1982, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1998. 2001, 2004, 2005, 2008

or reduced to a more sensible "ready to drink" range of, say '82-'96 (both being produced in both years, and all being 21+ years old:
TTF: 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996
TV: 1982, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996

(optionally, drop the TV84 and then all the rest are both available in all years in that span for a straight head-to-head)
(further optionally, add the TVVV95)
TTF: 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996
TV: 1982, (1984,) 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1995, 1996
TVVV: 1995
