Vintage with an '8' theme.

Post by forest26 »

OK B&F Now booked for the 5th June

Some comments on the theme would be useful.
either:
a) we try and construct a vertical of examples from years ending with an '8'
b) we go for a 'blind' bring a bottle with an 8 in the vintage as suggested by Alex.

Please confirm availability for the evening and your preference on theme.

b) would be easier even though that that could mean VPs from the 1980s pre-dominating-although that's no bad thing at the moment.

Hmmm - not quite what I had in mind.
Ending in 8 might be more along the lines (exceptions for anything 18XX)

5th June is good for me.

For the theme I agree it should blind bottles ending with an 8 in the vintage with an exception made for any port from the 19th century.

So the theme effectively becomes one of A Port From 18XX, 1908, 1938, 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998, 2008.

I strongly suspect that either people will struggle to meet the theme requirements or we will end up with a lot of port from 1998 and 1988 - personally I'd rather drink port from the other 1980 vintages than port from these two years.

How about a slight variation so as not to disadvantage people with less deep cellars? How about "Port With An Eight" but the vintage has to be pre-declared and no duplication of vintages is permitted?

Or how about "Port With An Eight and At Least 50 Years Old"?

Or go back to the variation that I tried last summer for the Port Forum anniversary and go for a vertical of eights: 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958, 1948, 1938, 1908, 1899, 1898, 1897, 1896...
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Personally speaking... I like the purity of the theme 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958, 1948, 1938, 1908, 1899, 1898, 1897, 1896... (which was the original intention). I can fill most of the years if necessary (except 1908)

I can bring an 1897 that I've been looking for an excuse to open.

Assuming others can fill some of the easier years - I have:

68 - S, Fg
58 - W, Mz, Gm
48 - T, F, G
38 - only Tawny
18 - possibly?
08 - none
18xx some

FIRST POST UPDATED

I am away for a large part of May - I need to shape this up.
Can you let me know what you would be able to bring ?
If you do not have any 8's I can probably fill the gaps.

I'm definitely in and have just booked a room in town to stay that night. Unless anyone objects vigorously, I will bring a Graham 1897.

I've edited the first post to show that I'll bring the G1897

Anyone who has a problem finding the right wine can ask Tony or Tom very nicely if there's anything available for adoption...

Nice find on the N58 though, Ian.

If Ok I would bring a Mz 58. Or is that year blocked now with the N58?

I have anticipated that this will be difficult to fill for some. More than happy for others to adopt.

I didn't think I would be able to make this date, but it now appears I could. However, I believe you're full, so perhaps I could be added as a reserve?

My knee operation has been delayed due to my current employment status.

Am I still in or on a wait list?

Excellent. My bottle with three 8's in the vintage is already at the B&F along with a modest but very drinkable back-up.
