Just a post to resurrect this thread as it moves closer to happening... I can confirm I would still like to come, and still have the W70 to offer.

Do we have a Croft 70 (75cl) yet?

If not, I can bring one of those.

I would like to, but there is now a very strong possibility that I will be generally unable to make Thursday evenings during term-time; better down-grade me to maybe/reserve for now; will confirm either way once certain.

Please confirm.

Or I could contribute a magnum of F70.
F70 preferred.

Hello all,
I hope you're well. Long time no post, and tbh I'd rather not have to. But, Mrs Gh and I have moved to the seaside (well, Bournemouth), and the logistics of getting ourselves up to the Big Smoke for Port on a Thursday evening are [is "logistics" plural?] beyond us for the time being.
Therefore, with regret, we would like to withdraw our participation at the tasting, and offer our seats at the table to other (and perhaps more) deserving persons.
We hope that the organiser(s) can control the inevitable rush and greatly regret any inconvenience caused.
Have a splendid evening, and we look forward to catching up another time,
Simon & Helen

With the absence of the Gandys, we have lost two-thirds of those of the intended attendees who were at the first use of the placemat software, fifteen years ago.

We’re still on, but I feel less need to reproduce precisely an enjoyable but not of-itself remarkable tasting held in late 2002. Should the theme become ‘Bring a Sandeman or a 1970’? Or less specific than that: ‘Bring an Appropriate Bottle, Sighted’. I like the latter.

{Expletives!} {Expletives!} {Expletives!}

I now recall what happened. When this tasting was created the attempt to book a room was rejected, because it was too far in the future. And I failed to make a diary entry nudging me into booking. And now it’s too late. All rooms taken for that date.

What should I do?

Have you tried contacting some of the other Davy's establishments we've used in the past? Ignore Mike and Simon, I for one would like to stick to this date :D

Best bet would be to try other Davy's branches where we might be known.

Alternatives include:
A table in the open area at the B&F - not ideal but perfectly acceptable.

We could try for a table at one of the branches of Hawksmoor, although we'd have to pay corkage unless we moved to a Monday night.

I could enquire whether we might be accommodated at the Naval & Military Club, but we would need to pay corkage and probably would need to pay for room hire.

I can definitely accommodate us at Phyllis Court in Henley-On-Thames, no room hire and modest corkage.

Max Graham (Johnny Graham of Churchill Port's son) has said that we can use the private dining area at Bar Douro as a trial location for a port tasting (so long as he can join us!). We've been talking about setting something up for Jan / Feb when things are quiet in the restaurant, but I could ask if the mezzanine area is free - it might be too much of a push now though as I know he is really busy, but if we delay until Jan / Feb it would be an ideal trial venue.

Let me know if you want me to follow up on any of the venues where I have contacts.

If we held the tasting in Bournemouth it might solve both of those problems.

Well, it seems your options are to either change the venue, or change the date. Since people may have made arrangements already, changing the venue seems like the better choice (and AHB has provided some decent suggestions). If, on the other hand, you were to change the date... the Tuesday would look good for me ;)
