A Modest Proposal

Post by djewesbury »

We are a group of people dedicated not only to drinking port but to celebrating the unusual and interesting traditions of the port industry also. In this spirit I have a proposal, for possible adoption at future tastings.

I would like to suggest that, whenever practical, we should commence our tastings at four minutes to six. Where it is felt that this is not practical or desirable, then I suggest that at four minutes to six a moment's pause and an appropriate toast be introduced into proceedings. Both of these would, I think, be a fittingly idiosyncratic way to mark and celebrate the initial demarcation of the Douro, the world's oldest existing officially demarcated wine production region, in 1756.

Responses on the back of a plain postcard to the usual address, please.

But why 2 minutes to 6? Wouldn't 4 minutes to 6 make more sense?

I shall be walking through the door on the right when this is formally put before the house.

I do not feel the need to ask the opinion of Margaret from Bolsover or any of the other esteemed members of my electorate before making my decision.

Are we banning Americans from voting on the basis that they cannot tell the time?

I love the idea, but also vote to do this at 4 minutes before 6pm.

Ah, now I see it. I admit I got that wrong. What will Daniel do next?

Unfortunately you do not have the magical powers necessary to avoid leaving fingerprints...

We were just marveling at how good you are at maths.

Though, apparently, less good at history.

Just because history has been rewritten, it doesn't make a fact persist. Hail the new times and get with the programme.
