1991 Horizontal Tasting - Monday 9th December 2019 - B&F

Post by winesecretary » 22:04 Thu 11 Jul 2019

Although I have always enjoyed Vintage Port I have also tended to buy to drink in the near term: mainly odd bottles of 60, 63, 66, 70, and 77. The focus of my buying to lay down has hitherto mainly been Burgundy (plus, Madeira to stand up).

I now hope to lay down stocks of more recent Vintage Ports for the future while it is still relatively cheap (said from the perspective of a long-time Madeira fan who has seen prices for older wines rise eight-fold over the past 25 years). In enabling me to decide which ports to buy next, especially when looking to buy half dozens or dozens, I find horizontal tastings, like the recent 1994 tasting, extremely helpful.

I have only very rarely tasted 1991s but, when I have, I have felt that it has perhaps got slightly worse press as a vintage than it deserves. I would quite like to buy 1991s, of which I have just odd bottles that I have accumulated, in greater quantity before the prices jack up in advance of their 30th birthdays. I note TPF has not held a broad 1991 tasting.

From 1991 I have single bottles of Cockburn, Dow, Graham, and Noval Nacional [and now Warre]. I propose to taste these, in the spirit of enquiry, on Monday 9th December 2019 in the Red Room at the B&F, 1800 for 1830, single-blind. I propose to bring as a guest the American wine lover who picked up the NN for me, in New York, at an only-mildly-insane price. So, that leaves up to 12 additional spaces. I invite TPF'ers to join me with other 1991s, ideally double-decanted the night before. If we were to be as many as 14 persons in total, there would space for perhaps ten additional bottles. Since the B&F closes at 1000 on Mondays, we might each be able to take home a spare glass or two from our respective bottles for contemplation the following day.

The aim is not to be absolutely comprehensive, a comprehensive horizontal tasting would have to be a two-nighter. My hope is rather that we shall taste 1991s that there is a reasonable expectation of one being able to purchase at auction, or reasonable retail, over the next year. I am happy for TPF'ers who have not yet removed their 1991s from storage to adopt one of mine. I don’t want to cut across AHB's long-planned 91/92 rectangular so, please don’t think about donating your last bottle of Taylor Quinta de Terra Feita to this tasting instead!

If you are able, and would like, to attend please post on this thread in the usual fashion, listing what you might be able to bring.

Would it just be ‘91s or would this extend to the ‘92s that Fladgate declared? I have F92 I could bring.

In my email I promised I would let you know what I had from 1991.

Reasonably accessible I have Gould Campbell, Morgan, Vesuvio and Warre.

Let me know which of these you'd prefer me to contribute.
Top Ports in 2019 (so far): Cockburn 1947 and Quinta do Noval Nacional 2017
2018 Ports of the year: São Leonardo 1927 White Port (Bottled 2018), Quinta do Noval Nacional 1994

@ Doggett: Ck we already have, but there will be further opportunity for adoptions idc...

@ Alex M: G confirmed (adoption)

@ flash_uk: Just 1991s for this tasting, AHB is planning a 91 vs 92 separately. [There will also likely be a 1992 horizontal tasting next year, for the same reason as this one, I think the only 92 I currently have is T...]

@ CPR 1: Tv please

@ AHB: GC please

on Monday 9th December 2019 in the Red Room at the B&F
Are you aware that on Mondays the B&F closes at 10pm; on other weekdays at 11pm. If you were not so aware, please allow a suggestion that this be moved forward one day, to Tuesday 10th December 2019.

I was so aware; the (I accept excessively wordy) initial post mentions the issue. The rationale for the Monday is in fact multifold (i) as noted in that first post, we might get to take a glass home for mature consideration (ii) a Monday night was one when the B&F, despite it being 'Christmas Party Season' did not discernibly blench at the prospect of (a) TPF turning up (b) providing 200-odd white wine glasses for us to play with from 5pm (there is a lunch booking in the Red Room until then); (iii) tertiary but not irrelevant reason- my guest is already booked to fly back to the US on Tuesday 10th December, for non-port-related reasons...

Hi guys,
Could you put me down too please?
I could offer Fonseca or Taylors, assuming these Qunitas are acceptable?

@NickA - I will, and yes please - perhaps one of FG or FP (I think both were produced in 1991), since we already have Tv and the TTF is pretty hard to find so fails the 'reasonably available' test. Let me know which of FG and FP you intend to bring.
