An odd job lot bottle with poor level (VTS)

For the second time in a week I have had to deal with the remnants of a Symington inner aluminium foil that has corroded down to a hard crust that has to be scraped off with some difficulty

Top 5mm of cork rotten, centre part put up some resistance to being withdrawn, bottom third crumbled. I've been here before - this is a bottle that has spent much of it's life stored vertically.

Decanted 24hrs ago - used an antique silver plate decanting funnel (recently acquired) for the first time - worked very well.

Fair amount bottle stink at first sip - good colour.

No real evidence that this wine has suffered from it's past - is no more evolved than I would expect. Wine is a little fiery though, and lacking integration - but it's a '77 - so patience may be rewarded..

Later yesterday evening I noted that this wine was coming together, and now, 48 hours on - it is just about perfect!

Fire almost completely gone now - composed, excellent bouquet, classic Warre signature.

With a little more depth and gravitas, this would be a contender for a 10 score - as it is, this gets a 9 for immediate gratification.

Where's it going?

The wine comes over as fully mature, and on the forward edge of it's plateau. It seems mercifully free of the 'Peter Pan' syndrome, so I'll guess this is a long haul player.

So score 9-9 - not bad for a badly cellared bottle!

Important to note that if I'd attempted to score this yesterday, it would have struggled to score a 5 - it really needed the extra time in decanter..
