1970 Taylor

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A bottle bought from BBR in Jan 2018, sourced duty paid from one of their clients. On inspection, it looks as though the bottle had gone through Peter Wylie's hands as it had one of his replacement labels. UK bottled by an unknown bottler. The cork was very soft and was horizontally branded, in big but very hard to read lettering.

A delicious mature strawberry red colour, 70% opaque. Sweet redcurrant and a touch of spearmint on the nose, sweet yet with a nice piquante edge. On the palate this has a lovely balance, fresh at first, slightly sour redcurrants and generous acidity. While not particularly complex, under the fruit there is a powerful ground peppercorn inspiring heat. Long finish, masses of sour cherry but with a lovely lavender perfume at the end which lasts for so long.

This tasting note was written around 24 hours after the bottle was opened and decanted. The initial impressions, at around 2 hours, were of a wine which was hot, alcoholic and lacked fruit. A day later, the wine has found its feet and is bringing plenty of enjoyment although is nowhere near as good as this wine can be. 87/100. Opened 28-Feb-21. Decanted 1 day.
