2018 Fonseca Guimaraens

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Apologies for not posting these last year, but I'm now posting my tasting notes on the three Fladgate Partnership Ports from 2018. These were all tasting notes based on tasting the wines over an extended period of a week, allowing the wines to develop and show all the components in the blends.

A very dark purple shade of red, opaque with a narrow rim. Powerful fruit on the nose with a lovely touch of esteva. Surprisingly punchy on the palate, sweet bramble with a lovely flower perfume to it. Deep black chocolate sits within the bramble and the acidity is stricking. There is a slight greenness to the tannins on the aftertaste, and a very long bramble finish. This is a big and chunky Port, balanced but no shrinking violet. Extended time open really allowed the high levels of acidity to show. 87-89/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Hi Alex,
Your scores for the TFP VP's 2018 are remarkable low, especially compared to your other scores for 2018 VP's: only Offley and Churchill's Quinta da Gricha score as "low"! Did you taste them about the same time in 2020?
P.S. Did you taste Pintas VP '18? I'm very curious if you liked it as much as their previous vintages!
