After the 1991 tasting I went out into the auction marketplace and backfilled on the three winners- Croft, TV, and QdlR.
This was a bottle that was opened four hours ahead to end a Friday night dinner for six that for Covid-19 reasons turned into a dinner for three. So we only drank half of it. Immediately Taylor on the nose, that violet scent and the hint of chocolate tannins. Firm palate. A tiny bit of heat that said too young or under-decanted. But very good with the Colston Basset.
The other half was consumed between two at the end of what was intended to be a light lunch on Saturday. A glass of sherry with the nuts, a glass of claret with the really splendid pork pie and salad; and then the cheese. Fancy a spot of port with this? It had blossomed into its full pomp; a lovely, violet-scented, vigorously-fruited wine, both fully, plummily, ready and good to age another decade. We ended up, happily, slightly blotto, in the best tradition of not-meaning-to.
Lovely wine. Not shouting it from the rooftops, but real quality. Ready, but best with an 18-hour decant.
