Bottled by Grants of St James's, with the infamous plastic capsule. Cork came out cleanly but in two pieces. Excellent level, in neck. 4 hour decant.

A superb garnet, 50% opaque. Nose of tobacco and dusty cherries. Figgy, lusciously sweet, but balanced, palate. Entirely resolved tannins. Very long finish with a little pruneaux fourre.

Absolutely compelling port; four of us drank it in about thirty minutes flat, and would happily have finished off the other half of the magnum that this, sadly, wasn't. A happy reminder that when 1963s are still good they can be very, very good.
