(Slightly shorter than average) cork revolved in neck when attacked with corkscrew but came out more or less wholesale in a couple of chunks. Large amounts of sediment ranging from grape-like sludge through to coffee grounds.
The wine pale orange. Some mint and heat on the nose. Orange and star anise and caramel on the palate. Fairly short marmalade and grapefruit finish.
Due to poor storage- heat damage I think- alas a bottle in too poor condition to consume. But, there was a sense of what this bottle might have once been (twenty years ago, a nice minor port) and what this wine might still be capable of, if a bottle is found in impeccable condition (an elderly, but still very pleasant, port of the lighter variety).
