2018 Barros

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Occasionally I taste a Port which makes my eyebrows shoot up — this is one of those. This wine is so different in style from most other 2018 Ports that it really stood out from the crowd, and in a good way. Straight from the go this had an astonishing perfume, very floral and full of sweet raspberry fruit but the palate was where the huge levels of acidity and power were clear what was going to give this Port the structure to age and mature for a century. Despite the acidity, the Port is balanced and the fruit very precise. The fruit and barely noticeable tannins settle quickly on the palate to become a very nicely balanced wine, elegant, floral and incredibly acidic. Very impressive, and very different to other Ports tasted from this vintage so far. 93-95/100. Tasted over 5 days on 29 July 2020.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Garrafeira Nacional offers Barros VP 2018 for €23.12/bottle! Reading your note that must be an incredible bargain!! (and also Calem VP '18 and Burmester Arnozelo VP '18 for less than €25....).
Edited: this afternoon the Barros changed to €23.92 and the Arnozelo to €26+ :(

That’s a great spot! I’ve ordered in some of the Barros, I am intrigued by Alex’s tasting note and at that price it would be rude not to.
