2018 Ferreira

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A cask sample in half bottle drunk over the course of four days to allow the wine to show its full potential. Sweet flower perfumed nose, rock rose and black fruits. A lovely smooth texture bringing layer after layer of flavour - first the rich, full and sweet blackcurrant, then a fine floral perfume before the fine-grained dark chocolate tannins. Patience holding the wine on the palate is rewarded by more and more flavours. The aftertaste is dry and grippy, bringing the fruit to the front of the focus and leading to a finish that is very long, full of dark chocolate and coffee bean. This is a very impressive, finely crafted Vintage Port. of the three (Sandeman, Offley and Ferreira) this is the wine which changed the most over the course of the four days, with a big and powerful Port eventually emerging from the initial fragrant beauty. 91-93/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
