1998 Taylor Vargellas

Post by winesecretary »

From a half bottle. 50% opaque, very much red rather than purple, rim heading toward brick-coloured. Slight prickle of heat and spice on the nose at first; then the mint and herbs come through. Quite viscous in the mouth, almost gloopy, lots of glycerine. A summer fruit pudding port: mainly red fruits, lots of raspberry and redcurrant acidity, a bit of blackberry. Hint of heat late on, before the chocolate comes through on the finish. This is really rather likeable; in half it is ready but will hold for a few years yet; I suspect no particular hurry (up to a decade?) before it in full bottle format.
