2016 Quinta da Gaivosa

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Quinta da Gaivosa from Alves de Sousa, available in the UK through Top Selections. 19.5% alcohol.

Deep red with a wide rim, one of the ports made from this vintage in the more lightly extracted style for colour. Exuberant on the nose with lots of redcurrant and a touch of cigar tobacco. A delightful silky texture on the palate. Restrained at first, then the fruit arrives, flower perfume emerges and the balance of the wine starts to shine through. Elegant and balanced the wine has a lovely freshness on the palate. The tannins are modest and mostly dominated by the fruit, the acidity is balanced well against the vivacious pure fruit. Great finish. This is a port in the more elegant of the two styles seen from the vintage. 88-90/100. Tasted 29-Oct-18.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
