2016 Sandeman

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Opaque centre with a wide rim. Rather closed on the nose showing a little blackcurrant and some sous bois vegetal complexity (in a good way). A swirl releases a little more astringent acidity. Smooth in texture on the palate, silky and rounded. Deep bramble appears on the palate, sweet but with an immediate undertone of complexity and layers of flavour. The tannins are huge but ripe and toasted. The tannins deliver a dry aftertaste that is big and punchy; the finish continues the theme of great complexity and never seems to end. An exceedingly impressive port. 94-96.

Tasted 12 September 2018.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

A very impressive port indeed. Sandeman has made huge leaps in quality of their VP in recent declarations. It’s good to see them back on top form.

S16 Deep Ruby Red. Huge nose. Lots of red fruit, raspberry compote, but not reductive. Great acidity and tannins. A very finely balanced port. Even nicer than the sample tasted at the b.f.t. Sandeman masterclass earlier this year that I gave 93 points to. Great potential.

80% opacity, dull red. redcurrant and green melon. Redcurrant, medium acidity mid palate, flavour intensity quite low, short finish. Tannins medium coarse, very dry. I must have been tasting something different to Alex and Simon!
