Some of the usual suspects gathered at the White Horse in Newport, Essex for the traditional Port Forum Christmas gathering to which were brought the traditional ‘Unknown shippers and their peculiar friends’. Delights of the evening included the very fine fillet steaks, the sparkling company of Jo (pub manager), Mel (on duty for the evening) and Jane the chef.

Re: 1942 Graham
Mahogany brown colour, mature appearance; 40% opaque. Warm nose with a touch of cinnamon and dried orange skins; gentle, soft and very pleasant. Delicious flavours on the palate, lots of coffee, toffee, caramel and a dash of raspberry concentrate. The flavours combine well on the palate, developing and growing to deliver a set of flavours which are big, round and very sweet. There is a touch of dryness on the aftertaste, which brings coffee and milk chocolate in a set of tastes which are wonderfully round, sweet and totally delicious. There is some initial heat, but this fades quickly. The finish is slightly odd in that it initially drops off quickly, but never completely disappears staying as a persistent orange blossom honey. A lovely port, but which is slightly shaded by the other ports this evening. 94/100. Decanted 1½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

Soft, lovely, light red cherries, very tasty. One attendee commented that "if you don't think this is the best port here, then you're an idiot"
An excellent port certainly, but for me exceeded by three others present; ah well, I'll be over there in the corner - along with AHB it seems (unfortunately I didn't photograph the voting sheet, so unless someone else has it, I can't tell how much company we have!).
