1947 Cockburn

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Opened for lunch at a seafood restaurant in Matsosinhos.

Burnished red colour, attractive appearance that is around 40% opaque. Baked fruit on the nose with sweet dried figs and fresh orange water which all combine together to give a nose which is sweet and delicious. The port is smooth onto the palate, smothering the palate with flavours of mature orange fruit and a pungent licorice; spicy, well balanced and full of life. The spice and peppercorn come through on the aftertaste, where the licorice is red rather than black and the finish dominated by sweet orange concentrate. This was a lovely mature port which would have merited a much higher score (of 93) had it not declined so rapidly in the glass. 89/100. 21-Jun-17. Decanted 4 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
