1996 Fonseca Guimaraens

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Deep maroon-black colour, opaque centre. Wonderful nose of sweet dark cherries with dark chocolate shavings. Sweet fruit, lots of dark cherry, deep and very concentrated, Soft tannins show on the palate but the overwhelming impression is of rich and dense fruit, sweet and rounded. Purple fruit on the aftertaste and a long, big finish; rich and dense, This is a very fine port which has plenty of life ahead of it and will give very good drinking for 2-3 decades. The last three years really do seem to have demonstrated that port, and this port in particular, comes into its stride when it reaches the age of 21. 91/100. Drunk 09-May-17. Decanted 1½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
