1992 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottle number 4534. Deep red colour with an opaque centre. The youngest looking of the ports drunk this evening. On the nose this delivers lots of black cherry. The fruit is slightly restrained on entry, but has a delicate fragrance and plenty of tannins to provide structure and balance. A slight figginess shows on the palate, a palate which is deep and has a great texture. The aftertaste and finish are full of black cherry fruit. This is a very nice port which is drinking well. Served blind, this was guessed to be Warre 1977. 90/100. Decanted 13 hours. Drunk 28 September 2017.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I beg your pardon?

I've been lead to believe that's a colloquialism for "where'd you get that?"

It literally means "the where?" Or with context, "from where?"

I believe I had this at the Quinta in 2014, and it was delicious. But alas, not available.

Are you thinking of the Family Reserve colheita, which is only available at the Quinta? The 1992 vintage port was made, bottled, sold and distributed just like most other years.

Glenn
IIRC, it was 1989-1991 that was kept at the Quinta. Hence the wax capsules as the corks were feared to have started drying out.

1992, like the previous few vintages, weren't made in huge quantities and all are not easily found today in secondary markets.

D'ohh! Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking of. I saw "1992 Vesuvio" and immediately went to Colheita because I wasn't aware that they even made a 1992 VP. I thought they did '89, '90, '91, and then started regular yearly-ish production in '94. Mea culpa.

V92. Dark dark red, 90% opaque. Very soft and smooth. Lovely under-mature Port.
