2015 Niepoort

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Recently approved by the IVDP, Dirk considers this vintage to be better than his 2011.

Purple / scarlet in colour with a medium rim. Powerful nose, grassy and fragrant, full of flowers over a deep and bitterly sour blackcurrant - just the smell sends the saliva glands into overdrive. Slow and leisurely entry, chocolate backcurrant juice over a deep and concentrated acidity with ripe but gentle tannins. There is a lovely burst of flower perfume at the end of the palate, which is followed by an interesting chocolate biscuit that morphs into blackcurrant and sour apple.

Overall, this is an interesting port. There is a purity of fruit backed by clean acidity and an unusual green grassy note. 89-91/100. Drunk 04-Apr-17.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
