2011 Sandeman LBV

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Purchased from Waitrose for £15. Deep cherry red in colour with an opaque centre. Astringent nose that is not very attractive, showing a little reductive scent. On the palate this is very smooth on entry with tannins quickly coming through and leading on the mid-palate. There is a lot of acidity too, with the fruit (and gentle flowers) struggling to keep ahead of the structure - but it does. Youthful and powerful palate with a sharp acidic burn on the aftertaste leading to a big cherry and dark chocolate finish that is huge in volume and duration. Good LBV port which will be happy to rest in a cellar for several years yet. 87/100. Drunk 01-Mar-17.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
