1996 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Dark red colour, no youth; opaque centre. Gentle rose and blueberry perfumr. Good depth of flavour on the palate with ripe and soft fruit backed by mid-palate acidity and milk chocolate soft tannins. Some fierceness on the late palate and a bit of heat from the acidity at the start of the aftertaste, but the overall impression on the finish is of rich, ripe bramble fruit. Tasty port, but unlikely to reach the status of greatness. 89/100. Drunk 21-Feb-17. Decanted 4 days.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Do you think this is mature yet or does it still have some time?

I think it has another 10 years or so to reach its peak, but it is pretty good already. Really rich and luscious - like caramel chew-chew ice cream or like port would be if Ben & Jerry's made port.
