1827 Quinta do Noval

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Produced by Joao Allen, where it had been stored upright for close to 200 years.

Golden colour with a pale green rim, 20% opaque. Not much on the nose, just some gentle lemon and lime oils and hints of rosemary. Reluctant to show anything on entry but patience on the mid-palate allows the gentle acidity and soft tobacco to lead a dry sherry-style profile. This appears to be lower in alcohol than modern port and from the dryness appears to have been partially fortified. A good dose of acidity runs right through the wine and supports a long, long finish of lime juice. 85/100. Drunk 26-Sep-16. Pop 'n' pour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
