1985 Fonseca

Dark red colour, mature but still with cherry red tones and no bricking; 70% opaque. Dark cherry and mild chocolate on the nose, but faint and restrained. A big wine on the palate, full of sweet cherry and blueberry fruits; gentle tannins tease the tongue and the acidity is refined and perfectly poised. This grows on the palate to deliver multiple layers of flavour but never becomes brutal. Sweet, floral fruit dominates the aftertaste with some wonderful Parma violets and terrific complexity - and lasts an amazingly long time. Still a decade or two away from its peak. Great port. 94/100. 03-Oct-15. Decanted 36 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
