Port to sell? Excellent! Please post here, with details of what you have, how stored, and where in the world it is. Please start by reading our ‘Standard advice to would-be vendors' and ‘A note to wine merchants’.

Four bottles of port handed down by my Portuguese grandad

Post by wizbeats »

Hi, im a new member to the forum and although I love drinking port, I have acquired some old bottles which were handed to my dad from my granddad and my dada has now given to me. I dont really know anything about fine port and I don't know whether its best to sell them or not, firstly they may not be worth much at all and the other thing is, I don't know if they will still be any good for drinking. My grandad obviously had them for a while and I don't know how he kept them, since they have been in mine/my dads possession, they have been stored upright in a wooden drinks cabinet, they are all in mint condition and I have taken some photos, so hopefully some of the members can comment and let me know what they think.

The first one is Romariz - Natal, the only date I can see is written in pen on the label (1963). The level on this bottle is at the neck.

The second bottle is Lacrima Christi Diepoort, again date written on label (1964). The level on this one is about an inch below the neck (im not too sure what that means).

Now the other two bottles, I think are port but maybe im wrong, they are actually labelled as vinho licoroso, I think they are fortifies wines but possible from white grapes rather than red?, perhaps some forum members can enlighten me, anyways, they are beautiful bottles to look at :)

Vinho Licoroso Navegante - Colheita de 1984

Lastly, another Vinho Licoroso Navegante, the only date on the bottle is on the top seal/sticker, shown in the photos (27/9/67).

Obviously, cant see the level on these two last bottles, and sorry if they are not port. Whether these bottles are of any interest to any collectors or not I don't know, but im most interested in a bit of background info on them and whether they are any good or not.

Thanks very much,

regards

Those ports are not ones for aging a long time. I would not expect much if you were to drink them. They may be "down the drain" port, but the labels are quite cool and worth removing.

The Niepoort is a very sweet inexpensive white Port. Not meant to age so I wouldn't hold my breath it's even any good anymore.

I suspect the last two are some type of distilled brandy. No idea how they would hold up or even how good they are. I'm going to suspect they aren't worth much money.
