My Late Father's Bottles

Port to sell? Excellent! Please post here, with details of what you have, how stored, and where in the world it is. Please start by reading our ‘Standard advice to would-be vendors' and ‘A note to wine merchants’.

My Late Father's Bottles

Post by julian_m »

My late father left a few bottles in his collection when he passed recently and I am curious about their worth (if any) in Canada. They have been stored in his home/cellar for a number of years and carefully protected.

1948 - KWV Port, Paarl
1980 - Gould Campbell
1983 - Calem
1983 - Barros - Porto, Imperial Tawny
1988 - Offley - Porto, Vieux Tawny
1992 - Taylor Fladgate 1000ml
1993 - Tio Pepe
1995 - Warre's Porto Quinta de Cavadinha
1998 - Dows - Porto
1998 - Ventozelo LBV

Thanks in advance for any help. His widow as asked that I sell them, so I'm looking for feedback on whether that would be worthwhile.

Hi Julian,

Welcome to :tpf:

All but one of the bottles in your list are from mid-ranking producers in non-classic years. The one exception is the Taylor 1992, which is in a very unusual bottle size if it is the Vintage Port from that year.

We do not have any active members here from Canada so it is probably impractical for anyone here to offer to buy these from you. However, you might have more luck posting on ForTheLoveOfPort.com as there are members there who might be able to overcome the logistics or provide you with better advice on valuation and the practicalities of selling privately.

As ever, our advice here is that you should keep them and enjoy them over the next decade or more, perhaps on an appropriate anniversary?

There are some members in New York State, New Jersey and Washington State so perhaps not a very long way from Canada - I think I remember Canadian bottles being discussed here previously.. So perhaps someone will put their hand up!

Hi Julian, welcome to :tpf:

Do you have any pictures of the bottles? I'd be interested in seeing pictures of the 1L bottle of 1992 Taylor VP. As Derek said, that's an odd-sized bottle for that vintage. I'm also curious about the 1948 KWV Paarl as it's not one I've heard of before.

I'm in the Seattle area and travel to B.C. relatively frequently, so depending on where you are in Canada we might be able to meet at some point in the future. Or if you're up for a trip to Seattle, we hold tastings periodically and we'd love to have you join us for one.

KWV is a South African cooperative that produces pretty good quality wines (including fortified wines) The 1948 is a colheita style fortified wine - I forget when it was bottled, but it was some time ago now.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
