12 bottle case of Graham's vintage to sell

Post by davidwythe »

12 bottle case of Graham's vintage port stored in a cool, dry, dark garage in England under the shade of trees. Been there since 1987. I only cracked the case to check the condition a couple weeks ago. All of the bottles and corks are in pristine condition. I am looking to sell for around £900. What do you guys think?

David,

Which vintage is it?

You need to know that "garage" is not a good word to use when describing storage.

You can check my facebook account at http://m.facebook.com/david.wythe.3?__user=223303508 for pics. It's 1985. The garage has a double wall with insulation so it wasn't very cold in winter and stayed cool in summer.

Hi David

Looking on wine-searcher.com, I see that I can buy a case of Graham's 85 for between £500 and £600. I'd get it for less at auction. Usually we suggest that private sellers can expect to net about half of the retail price for a case of port (for various reasons to do with provenance and so on). £900 is very steep indeed for this case.

Can I suggest you take a quick look at these notes that one of our members made to explain the options to potential sellers? If you're still interested in selling this is probably a good place to do it but the price will be a good bit lower.

You might be best drinking it yourself over the next 20 years!

Even in the US, which is typically more expensive than the UK, I can get a case of G85 for $900-$1000 at retail. Less at auction. £900 is indeed a steep price for this Port.

If you can get anywhere near £900 for a case of '85 Grahams, you are in the wrong business! The Symingtons will be ringing your phone as the next UK sales manager!

Actually, i just bought a case of Graham 85, retail. $768 before shipping, which would have been £481.

Do tell!

I can always use more G85. If I had so many bottles that it had to be my house Port, I would be pleased.

It was over at HDH during the summer -- they were having a sale and had loads of it. They only have 2 bottles left at the sale price (and not optimal bottles either), but I'm sure that kind of deal will come around again. It's an oft-overlooked gem.

Less overlooked now I fear, my local used to do it for £36, it has crept up by not very slow stages to almost £60. I still see it for much less than that retail by the case though.

I'm willing to crack open a bottle so you can taste it and then decide. I have 6 bottles left now and willing to sell for cheap.

Around 250 pounds for all 6. Like I said, you can taste it and see the quality and negotiate a little.

I'm not an expert but it tastes great to me. I'll be in London tomorrow and would be willing to bring a bottle to you carefully to taste. You can then name a price and we'll go from there?

Some of us are meeting for some Port on Tuesday in Holborn. Could you join us there with a bottle?

David, there is a forum here for 'Organising Tastings and Get-togethers'. You could always post there that you intend to attend one of the tastings, which are open to all comers, or you could even initiate one. There's a case tasting of Graham 1980 being held in London next month. A bottle of your 85 would surely make an interesting addition to that. I think you were already invited to one tasting, but you failed to reply. Please, keep things civil, and read the appropriate threads in the forum.

I'm guessing the bridge has been burned already.
