Unopened case of 1972 Offley Boa Vista Vintage Port

Post by tmiles »

I have a case of 1972 Offley Boa Vista Vintage Port and would like to sell it.
Would anyone be able to tell the best way to do this and roughly how much I can expect to sell it for?

Some questions:
• Where is it? UK? USA?
• How did it come into your possession? Bought in the mid-1970s to commemorate your birth? Bought recently at auction? Other?
• Where has it been stored?

It's in the UK. London to be more specific.
The case was bought as a christening present in the late 80s.
It's been kept in a dry store.

Does that mean a dry shed, or something more?

No it's indoors. It's a cool dark storage space where you'd keep things that don't need to be refridgerated.

Is Boa Vista the same as the Offley Forrester that AHB wrote a TN for here?

Yes.

1972 is regarded as a weak year, not helped by the industrial-alcohol scandal. And OBV at the lighter end of the shippers.

That's a shame. So it won't be easy to sell then.

It would probably retail for and this is a guess something like £40-£50. Selling to a wine merchant, or via auction, you net about half of that.

The best thing to do is probably to drink it. Some bottles will be poor (add to your next Spaghetti Bolognese); some will be pleasant drinking.

It may be easy but you won't get much money for it. As JDAW mentioned this vintage was seriously affected by the industrial alcohol issue and has a very poor reputation.

I suppose you mean for the case? I wouldn't pay more than 5-10 Pounds a bottle for this VP.

Funnily enough, I picked up an unopened case of this at an auction in Cheshire yesterday for £280 + buyer's premium, which I think was a pretty fair price.

It's interesting... due to the reputation of the vintage and the industrial alcohol scandal, I'd probably buy one or two bottles as a curiosity for as much as $40 or $50 per bottle. But I would not be interested in a case of it unless it was exceedingly inexpensive because I doubt that I'd be interested in drinking it with any regularity.

In other words, I might give you $80 for two or $150 for the case. So you might do better trying to sell singles as curiosities.

I have agreed to purchase the case. Some of you will no doubt try it at some point in the future.
