Post by Ali_ »

Hello there,

Can anyone advise on how to go about selling a case of vintage port, as a private seller?

Many thanks

Whatever route you use, you will need to be able to describe how and when the case came into your posession and, ideally, where it came from. You will also need to say how and where it has been stored since you acquired it (and preferably also how it was stored before you acquired it).

I'll post more later when I have more time.

Next you have to decide whether you want to sell privately, to the trade or through an auction. Whatever you decide, you should expect to realise around 50% of the current retail value of the wine you are looking to sell.

If you're going for a private sale, put the details of the bottles in this thread and invite offers. At the same time, offer the case to friends, work colleagues or family members who might be interested.

Or you can contact a local wine merchant, look them up in your yellow pages. Many wine merchants will make offers on mature wine that has been privately owned if the merchant thinks that they can sell it on at a profit.

Or you can contact your local auction house and see if they would include it in their next sale. Not all auction houses will handle wine sales so you may need to ring round a few. Make sure you are clear on the amoun of commission you will need to pay the auction house, whether the rate includes VAT or not and how much you will have to pay if the case fails to sell.

Best of luck!
