4 rare bottles for sale

Post by Paul Greenleaf »

Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice. I have four bottles of rare port which I am selling on behalf of my Mum. I am hoping to find out the best way to sell these?

I've put 2 bottles of Graham & Co (Vintage Port 1960, Magnum of Malvedos 1958) on 'Bid for Wine' (auction ending 15/11/15), but I'm not sure this is the best place to sell?:

There are 2 other much older bottles available:
Malmsey Lomelino 1887
Sercial Lomelino 1890

Both seem to be in very good condition, with painted stencil writing on the bottles (no paper label). They have been stored in dry conditions away from natural light. I've read about 'ullage' and the level of wine is at base of the neck. I believe both are vintage as they don't say 'solera' anywhere on the bottle, which I understand means they would not be vintage.

Any help/advice very greatly appreciated.

Those last 2 bottles you mention are madeira. Madeira goes reasonably well at auction, and storage is less of an issue, you could try to ask a local wine merchant. If you have a bid for wine account then selling them online is an option. I wonder if you could post a picture and tell us where you and the bottles are as there are folks here who might be interested.

The bottles are in East London.

I was going to get specialist packaging from a wine merchant and use a courier to send to buyer, could someone suggest the best method to transport?

I will not be the buyer (alas: I like old Malmsey), but if it would help I could collect from East London on behalf of the buyer. So that need not be an impediment.

I've never bought via bid for wine, but it looks like there is some interest in the two bottles of port so it looks like they will sell.

Where would you suggest selling the 2 older bottles?

For the Love of Port has a group of pretty keen madeira lovers. I would suggest you post saying these two bottles are for sale and asking for offers. If you get an offer you like, accept it.

If not, you could approach Bonhams or Christies or Sothebys and ask them if they would auction the bottles for you. The alternative is that you give a wine merchant such as Seckfords Wines a call and see whether they would broker them for you.

Madeira - Lomelino Old Malmsey 1887, Sercial 1890,

Post by Paul Greenleaf »

This post moved by jdaw1 into this topic, just to keep together the mentions of these fine Madeiras.

Hi All,
I am selling two rare bottles of Madeira. They are being sold by auction, links below. These were kept for years by my parents (hotel owners) and I would like these to go to a good home.
