Danish Vintage Port Club - 1994 tasting

Post by PopulusTremula »

In October the Danish VP Club held a tasting of 1994 ports. The results, which may be of interest can be found here: http://vintageport.dk/wp-content/upload ... Odense.pdf

Richard Mayson's thoughts and scores can be found here: http://www.richardmayson.com/Vintage_Port_Notes/

I recently brought a bottle of OBV out from storage so am curious to see if it shows in line with the bottle(s) in Denmark.

Thanks for posting this, most interesting.

My immediate thought was; quick to Tesco to see how much Quarles Harris/Tesco BOB 1994 I can still get.

Richard has been posting more tasting notes than I realised this year - I have more reading to do!
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Yes indeed! I think I'll stock up on these when the discounts are on offer.

Rather mischievous of you to start that old saw again. I would think it a good idea to try and find Delaforce / de la Rosa. Not to mention Ervamoira and all the other 'lesser' brands that outscored the big names!

The reportage on this event seems somewhat under-enthused; possibly, at 20yrs, a bad time to assess this vintage.

The Cockburn was clearly a seriously duff bottle - I've had this a few times now and it has never been faulty, IIRC..

This is another port on my wish list so I have just looked through the tasting notes on the Cockburn 94 and there seem to be quite a few duffers. The first point of the post about the general lack of "oh yes, right now" sentiment struck me too. The last time I had a proper 94 (as opposed to all those gallons of Tesco bob) was a Smith Wodehouse which tasted decades away from being ready. But then so is the Tesco really.

I am a member of The Vintage portclub in Denmark, and I was at this tasting.
When you taste that many bottels it`s tuff Work

When you give the wines point there are diffrents wievs
Ready to drink now ??
Powerfull now, anf drinkable in 20 years ??

Thats why you see so big diffrents in the score
Any time not spend drinking port, is a waste of time.

Indeed; many men, many opinions.

But I think it is a tough time to judge the 94s. They are trying to get from the exuberance of youth to the maturity which is never a good time. It's a bit like when they change the scenery at the theatre.
The other problem 94 has is expectation, a heavy load to bear. The few 94s I have had recently suggest that it is fine. It just might not turn out to be as astoundingly good as first envisaged. I certainly won't be opening any soon, revisit in 2024.
