Roy Hersh and I shared a fabulous Niepoort 57 Colheita last month. It cost me £60 :D

George Rhys offers port

George Rhys wrote:SPECIAL PRICING:

22 cases Taylor 2000 Vintage Port £475:00 case 12 bottles normal market price £550-650 case.
Among the most saturated blue/purple/black-colored examples of the vintage, Taylor's 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the leading candidate for the port of the vintage. 98/100 RP

13 cases Taylor 1997 Vintage Port £360:00 case 12 bottles normal market price £420-460 case
Saturated black/purple-colored, with stunning aromatics of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, and iron, this spectacular vintage port is one of the stars of the vintage. Extremely full-bodied, with silky tannin, spectacular concentration and purity, multiple flavor levels, and an evolved, forward personality, this is an exquisite yet precocious 1997 vintage port. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030 96/100 RP

4 cases Fonseca 2000 £425:00 case 12 bottles
Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scaled, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca's standards) 95/100 RP

15 cases Fonseca 1997 £345:00 case 12 bottles normal market price £460-£520
Somewhat of a lightweight for Fonseca, but undeniably charming, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca. Anticipated maturity: now-2020. 93/100 RP

27 cases Fonseca Guimaraens 1995 £220:00 case 12 bottles
A gorgeous young thing--even better than I remember from barrel. This is an extremely fresh, floral and fruity young Port, full to medium in body and of medium sweetness, with a ripe and plummy aftertaste of good length. Best after 2006. 92/100 RP

30 cases Fonseca Guimaraens 1996 £220:00 case 12 bottles
Supergrapey, with wet earth and stones on the nose. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with lots of tannins. Long and racy on the finish. A serious young Port. Best Panascal ever. Best after 2005 90/100 RP

25 cases Taylor Quinta de Vargellas 1996 £220:00 case 12 bottles
Intense aromas of crushed grapes and berries. Full-bodied, with excellent fruit and tannin intensity. Long finish shows violets, fruit and grape character. Vargellas is always impressive. Best after 2006. 92/100 RP
Prices seem good. I might have something myself.

I beg to differ..

I presume these prices exclude VAT - The Vargellas '96 has been offered by Tesco (when there's a sale) at £16.95/bottle - I wouldn't expect it to fetch more than £150/case at auction.

Taylor 2000 is currently selling for around £300+BP at auction

The price for Taylor '97 has been on the march, so GR's price is not too bad - but no bargain.

Fonseca '97's price lags well behind at the moment. I recently picked up two 6 bottle owc's at Christies - T97 & F97 - for £280 + BP for the pair.

It doesn’t help that, for some brain-dead reason, I read

Though the pricing is still quite OK for retail.

What a Bugger! On their site, they have a 55 Martinez 55 for £85. It was bottled in 62, which is odd, but I'd love to give that a go, particularly after Seans TN on it.
But I recently agreed with Her Indoors, that this Christmas will be tight, health, etc, permitting. I've promised no significant impulse buys. Remember we've got 7 kids between us!

Anyway, if this shop was nearby, and had this bottle in the window, I would pass it everyday, and pause, and dream. I can almost see this scene it in a Dickensian Novel, with snow falling in the backgound!

Alan,

I think the very fact that the Martinez 55 was bottled 7 years after the vintage when combined with the fact that you and the lovely Debs have exactly 7 children between you means that you have a duty to your family to buy it immediately and serve it with Christmas Dinner

Incidentally, with 7 years in wood this is either an LBV or a Colhieta, not a VP - so the £85 price tag isn't all that attractive :?

Derek,

What you say about the 7 years/Colheita clearly rings true, but they did have it in their VP list. Here's another one from the Fourwalls Wine Company. They're out there. And one day.....Image

I'm not sure if Martinez intended this to be an LBV or Colhieta but the fact remains that it cannot be considered to be a VP if it was bottled more than 3 (or is it 4) years from the harvest. It may have been a forgotten cask that was intended to be bottled as VP but they just didn't get round to doing it until 7 years had passed.

I wouldn't read much into which section of the wine list a merchant has placed it. You very often find Colhieta's listed as VP's in the UK because some wine merchants don't know what they are.

It never ceases to amaze me how successful Patrick Wilkinson appears to be at selling his ports at the prices on his list.

Pretty consistently, he is 30-50% higher than I am buying some of the same ports that he lists.
