That's what I mean, they were supposed to be my last for a while. Oh will power, why do you desert me? :?:

Anyway, not all bad news; just had a call to say the Fonseca was priced incorrectly on the website and it should actually have been £45 cheaper, so I've saved a little extra.

As it is becoming difficult to get in our cellar with boxes encroaching on steps (not a large cellar, but not small either) I had been planning on drinking not buying to clear some space. My will power also deserted me. I expect Tom will simply suggest getting another cellar :)

Solution: buy a small dog.

Then, in order to keep said small dog out of various parts of the dwelling, you will need a wall of boxes stretched across the entrance to the off-limits area(s). Easy for human to step over, impenetrable barrier to the small dog. Conveniently, said wall of boxes can contain things. Such as bottles. Which in turn contain Port. Not your best stuff, of course, but that case of LBV that you got at Tesco on sale? Perfect. You're going to drink that within the next year anyway, right?

This is all purely theoretical, of course. (It's not.) I would have no way of knowing whether or not it actually works. (It does.)

And you didn't say "don't worry about the refund, just send me an extra bottle of..."? ;)

Primarily for Julian, but also others may also be interested: Quinta do Crasto have released their Reserva Old Vines wine in large formats up to and including 18L. It's not port, but perhaps the largest format so far issued by a port producer?

Good effort by Miguel Roquette.

I vaguely recall that Tom owns a large bottle of a 1994: perhaps a Melchior of Warre 1994, or perhaps ‘only’ a Nebuchadnezzar.

Sainsbury has got the 25% off deal when you buy 6, they seem to have a few ports on offer at the same time, Malvedos, TTD vintage port, and Grahams crusted.

This is a little odd as other than having higher alcohol than most wines, they share very little in common. Anyway, I'm not nearly as much a port lover as a sherry lover, but I do enjoy either a middle aged tawny or a really mature vintage port. To keep the sherry company, we have the latter:
  • Croft Vintage Port 1960, £95 - amazing value for a great vintage now more than 50 years old.

Had a welcome day off today and popped into a local Lidl-Ck's Quinta dos Canais priced at £19.99 but registering at the till at £9.99. I availed myself of the three boxed bottles on the shelf :)

Very well done. Worth a trip to see if my nearest Lidl also has some, but sadly they rarely seem to have anything worth while. :(

Interesting to watch though. Never knew about the 1994 that we saw.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

And what is a 1970 Deiz VP? Never heard of that producer. Was trying to see who made it, but couldn't read it.

The music, oh my :? Any guesses as to when this was made?

And one pale looking 1977 Dow's VP, LOL!

My thoughts exactly! That's the most horrible colour I've ever seen on a 77 Dow...

Producer is Diez Hermanos, a producer I have only seen once before. I have a bottle of their 1963 vintage port.

Regarding well priced non vintage port; Sainsburys has the Graham Crusted down to £15/bottle and with 25% off if you buy half a dozen of something which is currently running this puts it at £11.25 a bottle for something which will keep well. They also have a well priced Cockburn LBV, but I can't remember trying this and so cannot personally recommend it.

I on the other hand bought the NV Moët, at a shade under £20/bottle I thought a few might come in handy now the warmer weather is upon us.

I am a bear of very little brain, and long words bother me. So sometimes I can’t understand things. And sometimes I can’t understand two things both at the same time.

For instance, I understand that Tesco’s is selling 750ml of Cockburn Special Reserve at £12.

For instance, I understand that Tesco’s is selling 1000ml of Cockburn Special Reserve at £11.

But I can’t understand these two things both at the same time, for I am a bear of very little brain.

No problem, Julian. It is just a matter of simultaneous equations.

The answer is that 250ml of the wine costs minus £1; the bottle costs £15.

Simples.

So if the bottles are big enough the cost is negative? I knew that I was on to a good thing.
